Confidence. Can we achieve it if we don’t have it?

I find it fascinating that although my clients book in for so many different issues, in many cases it often does not take long to discover that a large part of the problem comes down to confidence. Some people are very confident at work but not so out in the everyday world and others confident in social situations but not so at work. It may be authority figures, people who talk loudly or just everyone in general who seems to know more, have more to say, be better at things or just seem to have more confidence than we do.

Since we are all in situations every single day where we are communicating with other people, whether at work, socially or just in passing it can feel as if there is no let up to this problem. All these situations just seem to exacerbate those uncomfortable feelings and the emotional and social discomfort it breeds.

The big question is where does the problem come from and how can we fix the issue? Many issues are born in childhood and when we are young it can take only a word or a look for us to read into even a light hearted comment some slight that can still be stuck in our unconscious decades later. This is why it is so important to clear those old messages before we build our new programme of confidence in ourselves. It may seem like a huge task but I have found that with the right techniques one can help clear even those issues we don’t consciously know about in less than one session. Once that is clear then the way is open to move forward and build a new foundation of self belief and confidence. To help make these changes I use a mix of hypnosis, EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique), NLP and importantly some simple but very powerful techniques to help my clients make real changes to how they feel right there and then in any situation as it is happening.

Why is this is an area in which I am passionate about about helping people with? Two BIG reasons for me are a) I have experienced it myself and b) I have spent years researching and developing a series of strategies and techniques that will help my clients literally power up their own self belief and confidence in any situation.

Panic attacks, energy drinks and alcohol. A lethal combination?

 The dangers of energy drinks

A recent study at the University of Bonn in Germany has shown that energy drinks “intensify heart contractions” and can in fact change how the heart beats. This research comes as no surprise to me and I am sure to many doctors and therapists having to deal with the mounting number of people experiencing panic attacks. In another survey of US hospitals by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services in 2013 it was found that there had been a doubling of emergency room visits linked to energy drinks over the previous four years.

I regularly help clients who have been experiencing panic attacks and anxiety and this is a trend I also have noticed. Many of my clients will recount that their first experience of a panic attack initially came after a heavy night out drinking, after drinking too many energy drinks or a combination of the two.

If you have experienced panic attacks in the past or would like to take precautions against one occurring here are some points to be aware of. Obviously panic attacks are not only triggered by energy drinks and alcohol but it is important that we are aware of the dangers of drinking too much of these sort of drinks.

  • Energy drinks contain up to three times the amount of caffeine there is in coffee or cola.

 

  • Drinking energy drinks on top of alcohol, cola or coffee could have very unpleasant consequences.

 

  • According to medical advice too much caffeine can result in rapid heart beat, palpitations and even seizure so do make it your business to know how much caffeine you are consuming at any one time. Caffeine can also be found in certain medicines so always check the label.

 

  • Medical advice is that children and people with certain health conditions should avoid energy drinks.

Using the techniques I offer, three or four sessions will often be all it takes to turn around the discomfort and desperation that panic attacks can bring. Alcohol Abuse, the dangers and what you can do about it.

Alcohol Abuse

What does the term alcohol abuse really mean? We all know the word alcoholic and we know that certain people drink too much but where does the term alcohol abuse fit in? If someone is suffering from alcohol abuse it means that they may not yet be physically dependent on alcohol but the alcohol is already beginning to have a negative impact on their lives. This negative impact can take the form of relationship and family problems related to drinking, issues at work, driving while under the influence and irresponsible behavior patterns.

Left to follow it’s own path alcohol abuse can become a slippery path towards some very unpleasant experiences. Some may be able to sustain an outside appearance that everything is normal but this will be at great expense to family, relationships, job prospects and self worth.

However thinking about stopping is one thing and taking action is another. This is where it is very important to find a group and/or therapist to help give support advice and counseling in these situations. Some people get good results from meetings such as AA (Alcoholics Anonymous) and for others therapy in some form will help them find the strength to get out of this destructive cycle.

A couple of books I can recommend are Rational Recovery by Jack Trimpey and Addictive Thinking by Abraham J. Twerski. However a book cannot replace qualified help and support and the longer this issue is left to develop the greater the danger that personal, physical, financial and emotional damage will occur. Although we often hear the terms genetic and disease used with regards to alcohol issues at the end of the day taking responsibility for our own health and behavior is the only thing that counts.

Avoid the unconscious smoking trap.

The hidden reason people often quit smoking and then start again and how to avoid that trap

Most of the clients who come to see me for hypnotherapy to stop smoking have at various times in their lives attempted to stop without success or have in fact stopped for a period of time but started again after a few months and sometimes even years later. They invariably report that as non smokers they felt healthier, fitter and did not miss smoking at all. But that is until a voice in their head said “one won’t hurt” or “just this once to help calm me down.

I am sure we all recognise this scenario from personal experience or from someone we know who has fallen into this trap. What we don’t know is that this trap has most likely been set the moment we gave up! In fact when we stopped we actually hypnotised ourselves unconsciously to give ourselves permission to start at a later date. So how did this happen and how can we avoid it?

First I will ask you a question. How often do you talk to yourself? “Most of the time I think” is the standard answer that we would probably give. When we talk to ourselves we are using what sounds like our own voice. Now think of it this way, there are occasions when this inner voice sounds like someone else’s voice. For instance if we are internally mimicking what someone else has said to us.

So who’s voice is this? It’s your old smoking voice, the one that used to say “I’m getting a bit low I’ll just go out and get another pack to make sure I have enough.” It’s the voice that said “I’m feeling really stressed I must have a cigarettes.” Remember? It was telling you what to do all the time and just popped back up when you were least expecting it. When we stop smoking there is often a minefield of excuses left behind waiting to trip us up at at any moment we are not paying attention.

In a session will suggest to my clients that they never listen to that voice again and now they are aware of it,how it works and what it does they will be able to deal with it. So if you are about to quit or are already well into your new life as a non smoker make sure you are prepared for that old smoking voice if it tries to hijack all your good work in the future.

Some people may think that being hypnotised means that they have no control and someone is going to tell them what to do. The only thing a hypnotherapist will suggest to a client is what the client really wants to do and experience (as long it is for their own good) and that will always be prearranged between both parties. But isn’t it interesting how we are doing so many things on a daily basis without conscious awareness? Yes, we are very good at putting ourselves into trance without even knowing it.

Anger and why it is important to do something about it now

Anger its consequences and how to get help

Anger can have many physical and mental consequences. Although anger is a primary and natural emotion that we all experience at times it is there for our survival and losing control of this emotion on a regular basis can have severe consequences.

Anger results in a loss of control of the mid brain and an increasing sensitivity to stress. As the stress continues it then becomes easier and easier to activate this part of the brain thereby leaving one less able to activate the prefrontal cortex, the rational, reasoning part of the brain. Anger over activates the sympathetic nervous system and we lose the ability to control the balance required with the parasympathetic nervous system. This floods the system with adrenalin and an inability to control one’s emotions. Spending one’s life with “a short fuse” and the “fight or flight” system turned up full is a recipe for some very unpleasant experiences emotionally, physically, professionally and in one’s relationships.

If you think you or someone close may have anger problems check this list and see if you recognise some of the symptoms.

  • Do you have periods when you refuse to speak to people or will not help them?
  • Are you angry about something that happened in your past?
  • Does anger affect your life and the lives of people around you?
  • Is anger affecting your health?
  • Do you experience actual physical outbursts making you feel out of control?

Any one of the above can take a big toll on health, endanger one’s career and harm your relationships.

To help yourself:

  • Talk about it. Bottling things up only makes it worse.
  • Try relaxing therapies such as massage, yoga and meditation.
  • Start to recognise situations when you can feel it coming on and immediately take yourself out of those situations.
  • Learn healthy breathing techniques.
  • SEEK PROFESSIONAL HELP before things get worse.

I have successfully worked with many clients with anger issues. Hypnosis and EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) are ideal techniques to help bring the trigger responses down to a controlled and comfortable level. Both EFT and Hypnosis work by relaxing the sympathetic nervous system and engaging the parasympathetic nervous system. When the sympathetic and the parasympathetic (relaxation) systems are in balance then we can deal much more comfortably with our work, our relationships and with ourselves. Need help with depression? Try EFT

Using EFT to help with depression

EFT or Emotional Freedom Technique is an Energy Psychology technique that has it’s roots in Chinese medicine and acupuncture. In this technique the client will tap with their fingers on acupressure points at the same time as verbalising their issues.

Emotional Freedom Technique is a technique that anyone can use at home to help alleviate a wide range of emotional problems but when working on more serious issues such as depression it is wise to work with an expert and qualified practitioner.

Helping clients with depression is not a simple exercise in the therapy room but when one has a technique such as EFT available it is amazing how quickly it can release negative feelings and past traumas that could normally take months if not years to even partially resolve. This for me is why EFT is such a valuable tool to be able to use when helping clients suffering from depression. So often it is not necessary to go digging through traumatising experiences from the past and if there things that do need addressing then it is often the case that clearing one past experience will free the client from many of the remaining discomforts around their past with so much less intrusive and upsetting work that may be needed when using other therapies.

If you are not familiar with EFT the idea of tapping around various meridian points on the face can seem a little strange at first so I will often just “drop” it into the session and ask my client to instantly just tap on the points that I show them. In most cases they are surprised at the sudden relaxation they experience and when this happens the client will immediately know that something important is happening.

Another important factor with EFT is that it is a technique the client can take home with them and use whenever they feel confronted by any difficult feelings thereby giving them some control over their daily experiences.

Hypnosis for Blushing & Anxiety Disorders

Does Blushing Embarrass You?

Blushing is generally triggered by a perceived embarrassment or anxiety. When we blush (and we all do at some time or other) it is an involuntary experience triggered by the Sympathetic Nervous System. When we are embarrassed or under stress the nervous system opens the blood vessels below the surface of the skin causing reddening of the face. For some, once an episode of blushing has occurred then there can be a constant worry it will happen again. Of course by now the nervous system is on full alert and looking for any situation that might trigger the blushing again. It then becomes a habitual response leading to even more anxiety and loss of confidence.

Fortunately Hypnotherapy is one of the most effective and rapid ways to treat blushing. In my experience in just one or two sessions clients will often have this under control.

Here are some ways you can help your body and mind desensitise to blushing:

Allowing it to happen may seem contradictory but trying to stop it happening only makes things worse. It is the body’s automatic response and by using whatever ways we can to let go of any anxiety around the situation your body will find this response less and less near the surface. In other words however uncomfortable it may seem at first just let it happen with no self recriminations. This is a big step towards breaking the cycle.
Check your breathing. Learn some simple abdomen breathing to help settle any anxiety around this and help you to feel more comfortable in day to day situations. Breathing deeper into the abdomen will help the nervous system balance itself in a healthy way.
Remember blushing does not diminish you as a person and virtually everybody has had blushing experiences in their life.

Help is at hand, there really is no need to continue your life with this uncomfortable experience.

Brief History of Hypnosis

Hypnosis – a brief history

The history of hypnosis dates way back to at least Egyptian times. Early records show that the Egyptians would have a temple where someone with a particular ailment would take certain herbs and be given a form of hypnotic chanting to put them into a trance or sleep state. Once in this state the client would sleep after the ceremony and would dream of a cure to their illness.

Also in ancient Greece specific “Sleep Temples” were built to help people in much the same way and give them the opportunity to dream of a cure. The interesting thing here is that the idea that we can dream of something to find an answer to a problem is really not at all far fetched and in a state of trance it is often surprising how things long forgotten or seemingly random thoughts and ideas can just seem to “pop” into the mind when we are in a hypnotic or trance like state.

We have all heard the phrase “being mesmerised” and this comes from the eighteenth century physician Franz Anton Mesmer who hypnotised his patients using what he termed “Animal Magnetism” by having his patients sit in a tub fitted with iron rods holding hands and thereby seeming to promote this strange energy.

Mesmerism became very popular for a while and later appeared in India in the nineteenth century when the Sottish surgeon James Esdaile witnessed some amazing operations performed with no anesthetic. Esdaile continued studying this technique and became known in his time as the leading expert in pain free surgery.

Another nineteenth century Scottish surgeon James Braid also witnessed this technique called mesmerism but decided eventually to use the term hypnosis and was the first to bring hypnosis closer to the form that we recognise today.

Later that century Sigmund Freud had been studying with one of the flourishing French schools of hypnosis and decided to use it in his practice although he soon gave it up as he developed his own form of psychoanalysis. Interestingly this new “psychoanalysis” became the mainstream form of treatment for emotional disorders and hypnosis was side-lined as an Academic study. It is argued that but for this hypnosis would have become even more mainstream than it is today.

Hypnosis has often been seen as a directed form of communication until the twentieth century when the father of modern hypnosis Milton Erickson developed his own innovative techniques and language patterns that helped the patient in effect make their own unconscious decisions and choices. Erickson first used hypnosis on himself to help relieve his pain and discomfort from polio and much of his work and techniques still form a strong basis for the study that hypnotherapists have today.

The work of such experts as Erickson, Elman, and the co-founders of NLP Richard Bandler and John Grinder and many others has helped bring hypnosis into the twenty first century as a respected and powerful modality. Modern hypnotherapy is now recognised as an extremely effective modality to help resolve a wide range of issues.

Some news in the media today (08/10/13) is about Jason a 12 year old who had suddenly experienced a panic attack on a plane before take off and could not continue with his flight. This led to a full blown flying phobia that had prevented him from returning with his family to the UK for fifteen months.

Interestingly, since he was a baby Jason had taken many flights but this event came out of the blue and was so overwhelming that boarding a plane was completely out of the question. The fear of flying had become so en grained that even though his mother had not seen him for months and he had tried four times to return home he had found it impossible.

However as a last resort his father decided hypnosis would be worth a try and called on hypnotherapist Russell Hemmings to help. Very soon he was happily on the way home and reunited with his mother, family and pet dog in Weston-Super-Mare.

Fear of flying prevents thousands and thousands of people from enjoying the holidays they have always dream t of, from taking jobs they would love and spending precious time with family and friends. One of my clients a few years ago was a boy of Jason’s age who could not fly down to the West Country to see his father but like Jason within one session he was on the plane and is now a seasoned traveler up and down the country. Another recent client, a busy professional actor was dreading a tour to Australia but after just two sessions she had a wonderful three months in Sydney and since then regularly and happily travels abroad and up and down the country by plane.

Help to Stop Smoking

Hypnotherapy can help you to stop smoking

Did you know that smoking just two cigarettes a day can still leave you in danger from smoking related illness? Research by The Centre for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta found that there was still calculable risk from casual smoking even at two cigarettes a day. And apparently living with a smoker can leave a non smoker vulnerable to inhaling up to a third of the smoker’s smoke! smoker’s smoke!

When working with clients who are ready to quit smoking for good, the easiest thing about stopping is that unlike food, if one is trying to lose weight, there is no to ever smoke a cigarette again. This in effect makes it a simple change to make. We all have to eat but none of us has to smoke.

So there really is no need to hang on to those one or two “now and again” cigarettes. They are still harmful and stopping completely helps the ex smoker let go of a lot of unconscious guilt and anxiety around cigarettes.

Another important psychological change is that once we stop doing something it tends to become less and less present in our conscious mind. If you don’t like a certain food you probably won’t even notice it when out shopping because it simply is no longer in your awareness. The same with cigarettes. Once we don’t “do them” any more we begin not to notice them.
