Watch what you say!

There is a saying “Watch what you say around your body-it may be listening.”

A client came to see me last week to improve their performance in their sport and told me that they were working with a new trainer but were beginning to notice doubts creeping in. They then told me that their trainer had a habit of saying things like ” Are you feeling nervous?” or “Are you ok?” before a competition. Well you don’t need me to tell you that surprise, surprise they were beginning to feel nervous. Very nervous!

Someone else throwing careless statements our way is one thing but how many times do we do the same thing to ourselves or others? Just listen very carefully to your own self talk and be sure that to avoid giving yourself a continuous diet of negative thoughts. Your body and your mind is listening to everything you say and so is everyone else’s that you come into contact with.

The art of reconciliation

Came across this web page the other day Seeker after Truth
It is worth a visit to read a short story and the following quote.

“Aikido” my teacher said again and again “is the art of reconciliation. Whoever has the mind to fight has broken his connection with the universe. If you try to dominate people you are already defeated. We study how to resolve conflict, not create it.”

I was going to write a few words about how I related my feeling and ideas to this but instead, why not read it again and see how putting this concept into practise might improve the quality of your life and relationships.

Presentations

If you have a speech or presentation to make here are a couple of tips to help you put what you want to say in a more authoritative and positive way.
First of all you can probably speak slower than you imagine. Remember you know what you are saying but your audience needs to process the information because they are hearing it for the first time. Leave space between each sentence to let what you say sink in otherwise they will be mentally trying to play “catch up” and may lose your point or the punch line to your joke.
Another simple tip is to allow your voice to lower slightly in pitch at the end of each sentence (unless it is a question). This will give you an air of authority and help you sound confident.
Also pitch your voice lower than you would normally. This also gives an air of authority to what you are saying.
When you have started to put these points into your speech then practise it. Practise it out loud, on your own, to your friends and to your relations.
Using tips such as these will help you put across what you want to say the way you want to say it.

Timeboxing

Just been reading about a technique called “timeboxing”. I don’t think the concept is new even if the title is but it is still worth reminding ourselves of it anyway.
Hands up those who don’t suffer from procrastination? Well obviously I can’t see how many hands are up but there again you can’t see mine but I think 99% of us will have our hands in the air. (including me)
The concept is that to get yourself started (and that is always the hard part) choose a task or just a part of a task and give yourself, say, 30 minutes on it. Then choose a reward that you will get afterwards. This carrot and stick approach should soon get you started and the thought of a reward should keep you at your task for the alloted time.
The interesting thing about starting a task is that once we get going we often become so engrossed in it that we end up doing it for a lot longer than we set out to do. Once we actually get going our attention will switch to completing the current task. In fact we may even go on to a new one when we have finished the first one.
So there you have it. Easy. Before you know it not only have you managed to get started on something but you will probably have achieved more than you set out to!
You know – I think this is so simple but it works. I’m off for my reward now!

Success and being the best

Just think for a moment. What does being the best mean for you? Don’t we automatically imagine we can only be the best if we are better than everyone else? But this is our conditioning. Much more constructive to be the best that we can be, rather than defining our success against the achievements of others. There is nothing wrong in looking to others for inspiration but recognise and value your own achievements and then success will come to you.
