30 day free trial

Monday, July 16th, 2007

How long does it take to change a habit and make it stick? The accepted view is that between 21 and 30 days is the time span to change a habit and feel that it has become part of your lifestyle. Most of my clients wishing to stop smoking will find that they have no desire to do so as soon as they have finished the session but what if you want to stop smoking, change an eating pattern or even an attitude but would like to try a good old dose of will power? Well, why not give yourself a free 30 day trial?
We are all more predisposed to putting our money down on goods or a service if we feel that we have some guarantee in case we are not happy. On the other hand we find it harder to stick at something if we do not have a clear goal in our head. This goal may be feeling healthier if we stop smoking or lose weight, or changing an attitude and improving a relationship but if we do not give ourselves a goal as to how long we are going to stick at it to experience the benefits we may soon lose direction and give up.
So go on, give yourself a 30 day free trial. It’s free so what are you waiting for. You may find you like the change so much you don’t want to give it back!

High or Low?

Saturday, April 14th, 2007

Went to one of my favourite coffee shops today hoping to get a seat outside, sit in the sun and read my paper. Guess what? All the outside seating had been taken! Hardly surprising considering how nice the weather was. So I just had to sit inside where it was a bit stuffy and noisy. Now this may not be a very exciting event but what did it tell me?

Sometimes what we imagine we are going to get is not always what we end up with. I had a very clear picture in my mind of enjoying myself in the sun and spending a pleasant hour or so outside. It is very easy to expect everything in our lives to go perfectly to plan and then be left wondering why events did not fit with our own idea of how they should have gone. Whether or not I get to sit outside on a sunny day is not that important but if a small disappointment leaves us feeling cheated how do we cope with other more important changes?

It makes a lot of sense to plan but life does not always follow the plans we have set out for ourselves. Life is not static but throws up surprises and changes often when we least expect it. We need to be fluid and adaptable, to be able to go with the flow when things change. If not we leave ourselves open to feeling cheated, stuck and disappointed on a permanent basis. If we imagine it is our given right to enjoy that table in the sun every time we want it how do we cope when we don’t get it?

Rumi, the Persian poet said:

“Your hand opens and closes and opens and closes.
If it were always a fist or always stretched open,
you would be paralysed”

He wrote that in the 13th. century. The question is do we paralyse our enjoyment and connection with life because we have been denied something we want or can we allow ourselves freedom to adapt and go with the flow of life?

Five Frogs on a Log

Monday, March 5th, 2007

“Five frogs sat on a log. Two decided to jump off. How many left? Five – they only decided to jump off, they didn’t actually do it!
Making a decision is a really important part of the process that helps us make changes and achieve our goals but remember you have to jump if you want that decision to turn into reality.

With thanks to fellow hypnotherapist Janet Dowling

Thanks for your gift

Saturday, March 3rd, 2007

If you want to keep your integrity and your personal energy intact when being verbally attacked why not use this technique I read about from a Buddhist monk. Instead of taking it onboard, fighting it and handing over your energy to your attacker just say “Thankyou for the gift – but I think you can keep it for yourself.”
You may well have to think those words rather than say them but either way you will be a lot better off than your attacker.

How much do I need?

Monday, February 19th, 2007

A recent survey came to the conclusion that it isn’t having more that we imagine will make us happy – it’s having more than anyone else! This is probably something deeply engrained in our biological conditioning and I am sure we can all think of times when we have regressed back to our “envy thinking” programme.

Considering most of us have enough to live on there must be deeper reasons for us feeling this way. Unfortunately until we can detach ourselves from this treadmill we will find true happiness to be a very elusive goal indeed.

This is obviously just the bare bones of an issue that has ramifications in many areas of our lives (and for the human race). Worth spending a few moments thinking about?

Letting your "light" shine

Thursday, January 25th, 2007

Do you sometimes meet someone who seems to almost radiate a certain warmth and personality that makes tham easy to talk to and be around? It’s as if they radiate a special light that touches anyone they come into contact with. Their energy goes out to others rather than being locked up within themselves.

We can all tap into this energy by accepting that we all have our own unique and valuable place in the world and that by allowing our true “being” to shine out we can touch others and connect with the world around us.

Rather than keeping our head down and concentrating on our own problems how would it feel to open up a little and make this connection with others in our everyday life? Why not just try it and imagine that you also have your own unique “light” to give out. If you don’t do this already, instead of thinking constantly about your own perceived shortcomings and problems try letting your “light” shine out and see how it can reflect back into your own life in ways you may have never imagined.

The art of reconciliation

Wednesday, December 27th, 2006

Came across this web page the other day Seeker after Truth
It is worth a visit to read a short story and the following quote.

“Aikido” my teacher said again and again “is the art of reconciliation. Whoever has the mind to fight has broken his connection with the universe. If you try to dominate people you are already defeated. We study how to resolve conflict, not create it.”

I was going to write a few words about how I related my feeling and ideas to this but instead, why not read it again and see how putting this concept into practise might improve the quality of your life and relationships.
