When you are ready to stop smoking an important part of the process is to make a plan. Making a plan and writing it down will greatly enhance your chances of success. If you intend to cut down gradually mark the numbers you decide on in your diary and tick each success off. To stop smoking completely and immediately mark down the day you made or are going to make that decision so that it becomes registered in your mind. Some people like to tell friends and family to help focus on taking responsibility for getting a result and others just like to quietly go about it with no fuss or peer pressure. It is your choice and the clearer in your mind the steps you take the easier you will find it to get your result.

Planning will make it a lot easier and will help keep you focused.

Worth a browse through if you still need help to make that choice but remember there really are only two choices – Now or When it’s Too Late! So why not make it easy? Call me and I can explain how hypnosis and my unique programme can really help you make that change or if you live out of the area search out a good, qualified hypnotherapist. If you know someone else who has stopped smoking using hypnotherapy then their hypnotherapist would be a good place to start. http://www.notosmoke.com/

In my hypnotherapy sessions I see a lot of business people who are having difficulties with public speaking and giving presentations. Hypnosis and EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) are ideal vehicles to help make powerful and lasting change very effectively and rapidly. However when dealing with these issues an important part of a session will almost always include some simple voice projection exercises. In my opinion these are vital to giving a confident and well projected speech. We may have all the confidence in the world but if no one understands what we are saying then our message is still not getting across. Now I am not a voice coach and voice coaching could well be something worth following up but I do offer in my sessions as a bonus some very simple voice exercises that will really help get your message across in any situation. I originally began looking for some simple but effective voice development techniques at a time when I felt my voice could be more assertive in certain situations. It is one thing having the ability to produce a smooth and soothing hypnotic voice but trying to order a drink or tell a joke in a crowded bar is another!

To give you a taste of some of these simple exercises try pointing to your nose and saying “this is my nose.” Then do the same thing with your lips, your throat and your chest. Interestingly you will probably notice a change in voice tone that bears a resemblance to where you are pointing especially when you point at your nose. As you become more aware of this you can begin to develop the resonance and timbre in your voice that is required to command attention in any situation. The interesting thing I soon noticed once I started practising these techniques was that as my own voice developed in resonance the actual feedback I was getting inside my head from my voice helped add to my speaking confidence.

How rapidly we speak and how much variation in tone and pitch are also important for best results. Every positive change you make will add to your confidence whilst diminishing the anxiety and this will only help you achieve the results you are looking for. Like a lot of things in life once we know where to start and which techniques to use it really is possible to rapidly make positive and lasting changes. You really could be getting your message across clearly and confidently in just a few weeks.

One of my posts on www.hypnotherapistsglasgow.co.uk deals with Flying Phobia so it is always nice to get a text back from a recent client when they arrive home from their holiday and no phobia. A recent client wanted to go to Spain with her friends but was absolutely terrified of flying and had already backed out of a previous holiday for that reason.

We had one initial session a few weeks before she was due to fly and she immediately found that she really was not worrying about it anymore at all. However as the date got closer she began to experience some of the old feelings so thought she had better come and see me for a back up session.

It is interesting working with something such as flying since the conscious mind is often not quite sure whether any change has occurred. Until you experience stepping onto the plane you don’t know consciously if the therapy has worked. Although our conscious mind knows that our fear is irrational and unfounded it is interesting that when our unconscious allows us to let go of the fear the conscious often still needs proof and is still not always totally convinced. This is where we need to trust this creative part of ourselves and avoid too many internal questions as the positive change becomes a natural experience.

Hypnosis allows us to bypass our conscious questioning and that is exactly what we did in the session just a couple of days before her holiday. It also allows us to visualise a sequence of events in such a way that they become, in a sense, real. Visualising the flight and other important details whilst connecting it to feelings of relaxation and calm can, according to research, be as powerfully compelling as experiencing the real thing.

Oh yes, and here is the text she sent me when she got home:

“Hi Roger just bk my hol was absolutely fab i was gr8 on plane was a bit nervous at 1st then completely went away quite enjoyed it defo do it again i even fell asleep on the way back … thanks very much”

The initial “bit nervous at 1st” is an example of the conscious mind still not quite believing that it really can feel safe. However when the unconscious has been reprogrammed powerfully enough the conscious mind is then able to take a back seat and just relax. Somewhere within us we really do know how to make these changes and by allowing that part to do what it needs to do and change what it needs to change the new feelings will naturally become fully integrated into our actual live experience.

Can I make an instant change? That is a question that is probably at the front of most peoples’ minds when they come for a hypnotherapy session. Clients quite understandably will be looking for a rapid and effective change and rapid changework that lasts is my primary aim in the work I do. Every case will take whatever time is needed but something that we have had for twenty four years will not necessarily need twenty four months of therapy or more to resolve. This used to be the benchmark in many therapies but not any longer. So presuming I know my job and I have the tools to help this rapid change what can the client do to help take full advantage of this?

I work under the assumption that all my clients really do want to change but may not know how to do so. That is why they have come to see me. But the question is, how much of the process do they feel safe to involve themselves in? Sometimes there may be a feeling of wouldn’t it be easier just to metaphorically and literally sit back and see how it all “pans out”. In other words it would be more comfortable to do this on their own terms of involvement and keep a certain distance however much they may agree with what needs to be done and what is being offered. Unfortunately playing it this way does not offer full value because they are not completely engaging themselves in the process and not completely engaging themselves in the process means they are only going to make changes on their own terms. This is what is known as resistance and recognising this and resolving it will be a very important part of any therapy interaction for both client and therapist.

Now this in no way means that I want my clients to make changes on my terms but it does mean that without that full engagement in the process they will be protecting themselves from discovering what has been really keeping them from their true goal. The saying is “just looking at the weights in the gym won’t get you fit”. We really do have to pick them up and start physically doing something ourselves, and so in therapy. Our training is mental but just because we can’t see it does not mean that it is not happening. Becoming a fully involved part of the process is imperative because part of the process is what we are.

A good therapist knows how to help a client safely resolve this resistance and I firmly believe that virtually everyone of us has the unconscious understanding to know how to make the changes we want easily and comfortably. Full committed involvement in the process will actually mean that we are also able to make these changes rapidly and effectively and then, interestingly enough, we truly will be making changes on our own terms.

A lot of us these days have heard of the idea that because our unconscious mind doesn’t understand a negative if we use a phrase such as “I don’t want that to happen” our unconscious interprets it as we do want it to happen.

Found a good article the other day that illustrated this point very clearly and succinctly.

http://www.newmediaexplorer.org/sepp/2003/07/10/the_power_of_words.htm

I think you will find the section about negating a negative to be especially interesting.

It’s well worth paying more attention to our thoughts as a lot of these negative self-talk phrases easily slip by our conscious thinking processes. Just spend a day becoming more aware of your self-talk and notice how many times you slip in a negative phrase. The next step is to be creative in finding positive phrases to replace the negative ones. It could make a big difference for you.

I have to admit that I have always felt uncomfortable with traditional “self help” affirmations but never known quite why. The theory is simple – if you repeat your affirmation enough, because your unconscious mind does not distinguish between imagination and reality it will become a simple process to trigger the events that will lead to your desired outcome. So why, more often than not do we give up on our affirmations and what does the disappointment we experience do to us afterwards?

The main reservation I have with positive affirmations is that unless we can get the message past our conscious mind the unconscious mind is most likely to start putting blocks in our way frustrating any attempts to turn our thinking round. And where do these blocks come from? Our past programming – and until we can clear these deeper emotional barriers we will be likely fall at the first hurdle. Now going one level deeper unless we are ready to accept it, the affirmation will bring up our primal fears and programmes that will not only prevent us from achieving our goal but can actively sabotage it leaving us disappointed and frustrated. We need to be aware of the reasons that we want these changes to occur? Is the new job and the large house a hidden and desperate need for security? Does the latest car feed our need to feel better and more successful than the next person? These can be very basic instincts and although I have no problems with a large house or a new car if we try to programme for them from the wrong instincts then we may be surprised and very disappointed when we do not get quite what we expect.

Now none of this means that we should avoid affirmations and have aspirations but it does mean that we need to be prepared to do some work at clearing issues that have prevented us from reaching these goals in the first place. Also, we have much more chance of success if we can connect our affirmation to what I call our creative unconscious mind. This is where the true creation of our desires comes from and this is where in my opinion we need to process the affirmation to get the best results.

Because techniques such as hypnosis and EFT used therapeutically can connect us with deeper brainwave patterns they can be invaluable tools to help us release the past programmes that have been keeping us stuck.
